Australians Pledge their support for Timor in light of treaty cancellation

The Timor Sea Justice Campaign has launched a new petition calling on Julie Bishop to finalise a permanent maritime border with Timor Leste halfway between the two coasts in accordance with international law.

The Timor Sea Justice Campaign has launched a new petition calling on Julie Bishop to finalise a permanent maritime border with Timor Leste halfway between the two coasts in accordance with international law.

The petition, launched last Thursday has amassed over 1000 signatures in its first week and had a strong showing on social media largely through support by the Australian Council of Trade Unions, Oaktree and APHEDA Union Aid Abroad.

The strong showing comes after a ReachTEL poll in late 2016 showed that the majority of Australians want the Timor Sea issued resolved in accordance with international law.

The petition reads: “We call on the Australian Government to finalise a fair and permanent border with East Timor, halfway between our coasts, in accordance with international law.”

Paper copies have also been distributed to Timor Sea Justice activists in Brisbane, Adelaide, Sydney and Darwin.

Last week Foreign Minister Julie Bishop announced that Australia had agreed to terminate the CMATS treaty from 2006 and negotiate a permanent maritime boundary. Many Australians who have followed this issue closely for the last decade reacted with cautious optimism to the announcement.

Quotes attributable to Campaign Coordinator Ella Fabry:
“The support for this campaign is of no surprise to us, Australians have always had a strong connection to the people of Timor Leste”

“We know that the unjust behaviour of the Australian Government in this matter is not reflective of the Australian people who have a strong sense of justice and fairness”

“The Foreign Minister needs to know the Australian people are watching, and they want this dispute finalised in a fair and legal way.”
